In Financial Crime Customer Operations we protect Monzo, our customers, and wider society from financial crime, to help Monzo achieve its mission of making money work for everyone. We believe that our Financial Crime COps are best placed to deliver this when they have a holistic understanding of financial crime tasks and typologies. To facilitate this, you’ll have the opportunity to lead teams working across these typologies.

Every person in our team cares deeply about their work and the impact that it can have on Monzo and our customers. We work in teams of around 12 people, with each team completing a specific type of work - for example, PEP screening, while others have a more diverse set of skills.

As you’d expect, you’ll also have responsibility for some disciplinary and grievance matters, and work closely with your colleagues in other Operations teams and the People team to make sure that we apply these policies fairly and consistently.

You’ll be a direct report of our Financial Crime Operations Director, and be part of their leadership team.

????You’ll play a key role by…

  • Instilling a high performance culture focused on the completion of accurate, efficient work, and risk-awareness, in a team that needs to be laser-focused on both the customer experience and the safety of the bank
  • Being fully accountable for the performance and outputs of your function, ensuring we meet what is expected of us by our customers and policies.
  • Constantly thinking about the skills that our financial crime operations teams need, and making sure that our people have the knowledge required to do the job to the highest standard
  • Being an effective advocate and communicator of change
  • Supporting the rest of the leadership team in critically assessing our current processes, aiming for continuous improvement
  • Helping us become an exceptional place to work for the ambitious, highly-motivated investigators that we hire

????We’d love to hear from you if…

  • You have significant experience leading teams working in financial crime or fraud, and are a recognised leader across the industry in one or more of these disciplines

Offensive Security Engineer

Monzo is hiring a Remote Offensive Security Engineer

???? We’re on a mission to make money work for everyone.

We’re waving goodbye to the complicated and confusing ways of traditional banking.

With our hot coral cards and get-paid-early feature, combined with financial education on social media and our award winning customer service, we have a long history of creating magical moments for our customers!

We’re not about selling products - we want to solve problems and change lives through Monzo ❤️

Hear from our team about what it's like working at Monzo

????London or Remote (UK) | ???? £35,000 - £50,000 + Benefits | Hear from the team

⭐ Our Offensive Security team

This role sits within our Offensive Security team, reporting into the Offensive Security Manager. But this team is a part of the wider Security collective here at Monzo, a power-house team of passionate security professionals all working to make Monzo as secure as possible for our customers.

At our core though, the Offensive Security team is made up of breakers, not makers. We find the vulnerabilities, prove exploitability, then work with the other teams to fix those problems. We aren’t developers though, so we give advice to mitigate issues but don’t start coding fixes ourselves.

????You’ll play a key role by…

The work we do within the Offensive Security team is varied, but all involve hacking in one way or another. A lot of our work is project-based, with focus placed on areas we consider weak. This might mean hacking some new internal software or testing a new feature in the apps for example.

We also do projects that simulate a real adversarial attack (a bit like red teaming), and cooperate with our defensive teams to improve capabilities and skills.

The biggest service we provide to the other teams is placing a security mindset in the room. Ask those “what ifs” and get people thinking like an attacker. And it always helps to have a proof of concept to show to others!

As an Offensive Security Engineer, you’ll first be covering the smaller projects the more senior engineers can’t get to. This could include:

  • Testing new features in the Monzo apps (mainly the mobile apps, but sometimes web apps too)
  • Testing internal and public web services that support our products, tools and systems
  • Doing network testing (like attacking our office networks or hunting for vulnerabilities in sensitive networks)
  • Supporting the security bounty program

As you get more familiar and confident within the team, we’ll encourage you to take on some bigger, more challenging projects to help with your career progression at Monzo. But you won’t be alone, and always have the support of the others in the team!

????We’d love to hear from you if…

First and foremost you:

  • Have an unending curiosity to understand how the security of systems work at all levels
  • Have a strong attacker mindset, always thinking “what if I did…” when testing a system

The following would be nice, but aren’t requirements:

  • At least 2 years experience in security testing (ideally internal testers or consultants)
  • An industry recognised qualification such as CREST CRT, CCT (APP or INF), OSCP, OSCE or other equivalent (don’t be put off if you don’t have any, experience is preferred!)

????What’s in it for you

????£35,000 - £50,000 ➕ share options.

????This role can be based in our London office, but we're open to distributed working within the UK (with ad hoc meetings in London) (Please note, we are notable to offer sponsorship or relocation to the UK for this role)

⏰We offer flexible working hours and trust you to work enough hours to do your job well, and at times that suit you and your team.

????£1,000 learning budget each year to use on books, training courses and conferences.

????We will set you up to work from home; all employees are given Macbooks and for fully remote workers we will provide extra support for your work-from-home setup.

➕ Plus lots more! Read our full list of benefits.

???? The application journey

If shortlisted after your application, you’ll firstly have a chat with one of the Hiring Team. If successful following on from this ⬇️

  • Initial call with a member of the security team
  • Technical interview
  • Values and Collaboration interview

This process should take around 2-3 weeks - your schedule is really important to us, so we promise to be as flexible as possible!

We have some guidelines on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ace an application and interview at Monzo ???? You can read them here.

You’ll hear from us throughout the application process, but if you’ve got any questions, please reach out to business-hiring@monzo.com. You can also use this email address to let us know if there’s anything we can do to make the process easier for you because of disability, neurodiversity or anything else.

We’ll only close this role once we have enough applications for the next stage. Please submit your application as soon as possible to make sure you don’t miss out!

If you’d prefer to work part-time, please let us know and we'll make this happen if we can.

????London or Remote (UK) | ???? Base salary for this role is between £130,000 and £160,000, depending on experience + stock options + Benefits

About the team

This role is for a Senior Engineering Manager in the Business Banking collective. You will be leading across teams in an org of up to 20 people. We’re expanding and your role as the Senior EM will be to grow and build new squads as needed. Your direct reports will include Tech Leads, Senior Engineers and 1-2 Engineering Managers.

Our vision in Business Banking is to become the “Financial control centre” for SMEs. We are aiming to do this by providing the features, funding and services that businesses need. We want to integrate seamlessly with their existing tools to make them more powerful, and automate painful manual processes for SMEs.

Our journey so far:

  • 400,000+businesses in the UK now bank with Monzo
  • We won the #1 Business Banking Provider in the British Banking Awards

Building on the Monzo experience we want to adopt and enhance our existing features and provide new features that are specific to businesses. For example, building on top of Pots we provide businesses with Tax pots that allow them to automatically put money aside on every incoming payment to be used later in the year as they file their taxes. We also build new Business specific features like the integrated Invoices that allow businesses to create, send and manage their Invoices directly via their account.

Our teams have a wide remit working vertically across all the layers of the application from the apps to the backend systems, and also horizontally across operations and internal tooling to make sure we provide the best customer experience across the board.

Senior Engineering Management at Monzo

Senior Engineering Managers at Monzo are part of cross-functional, autonomous teams and groups. Our teams are mission driven, and typically include Product Managers, backend, web and mobile engineers as well as data scientists, designers and subject matter experts relevant to that mission. Teams are organised into groups, and then collectives - we aim to keep our line management structure as shallow as possible, and for teams to directly own decision making relevant to their work.

Senior Engineering Managers are accountable for the technical and delivery outcomes for their area - that means supporting and developing best in class engineering talent, as well as creating an inclusive team environment for people to do their best work. You’ll be responsible for structuring, organising, supporting and challenging your team to deliver on their mission.

You can read more on the expectations of Senior Engineering Managers on our Progression Framework.

Is this role right for you?

While this is not a role which requires hands-on-coding, we are looking for an experienced manager who has a strong technical and delivery background and has worked as a software engineer in previous roles.

We recognise that Senior Engineering Managers lead in different ways, we’re looking for someone who:

  • Delivery and Execution: Enjoys taking accountability for delivery across your squad(s), collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager.
  • Engineering and Operational Excellence: Actively fosters a high bar for engineering excellence within your teams. You’re accountable for the technical outcomes your teams deliver alongside individual engineer performance and growth, so holding a high bar (and clearly articulating your expectations) is key.
  • People Leadership: Has experience directly managing at least 1-2 Engineering Managers for a minimum period of 1 year, and leading orgs of around ~20 engineers. You can support, coach and develop them through their career with regular 1:1s and continuous feedback.
  • Technical Influence: Partners with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Builds strong stakeholder relationships with other teams, and creates a focus space for engineers to do their best work.
  • Organisational Wide Impact: Collaborates with the wider engineering organisation to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards.

We consider your application across all open EM roles at Monzo independent of which role you've applied for, soif you've recently applied to a similar role at Monzo and have been unsuccessful, please wait 6 months before applying again.

The interview process:

Our interview process involves three main stages

  2. Initial Call (1 hour) You'll meet with one of our Senior Engineering Managers or Engineering Directors. They'll ask you about your previous experience, in particular people leadership, product delivery and technical leadership. They’ll ask example based questions (‘Tell me about a time when…’)

  3. Loop Stage (3 hours 30 mins) The Loop stage consists of 3 x 60 min interviews that take place over 1-2 days (depending on your availability) and one 30 minute reverse interview (more details below).

- Team and Org Management (1 hour)
An example based interview with 1-2 of our engineering leaders. They’re interested to hear examples from your previous experience on the teams you’ve led, how you’ve shaped and partnered with product, and the impact you had.

- System Design (1 hour)
You'll partner with a Staff or Principal Engineer on a technical whiteboarding exercise.

- Behavioural (1 hour)
Similar to Team and Org Management, this is an example based interview with 1-2 Engineering Leaders. This interview focuses on your people leadership style and core behaviours as an Engineering Manager.

- Chat with an Engineering Leader (30 mins)

All things going well, you'll have completed the hiring process ????

Our average process takes around 3-4 weeks but we will always work around your availability. You’ll have the chance to speak to our recruitment team throughout the process.
