What is a Staff Software Engineer at Mozilla?

A Staff Software Engineer is the nextlevel froma Senior Software Engineer. At Mozilla this role can vary, but typically a Staff Engineer leads projects that require you to influence or direct the work of several engineers. Providingtechnical leadership, building team relationships, and helping the teams deliver on their objectives. The Staff Engineer is anexpertin their domain. About this team and role:

The Mozilla Corporation's networking team is looking for a skilled developer to work on a first-class networking stack and improve web experiences for many millions of Firefox users on desktop and mobile. The team is working on the core of the browser that moves the web. The fundamental network protocols and features like HTTP, QUIC, caching and DNS are our responsibility. We strive to provide a performant and secure browsing experience for our users. Furthermore, we work on advanced web platform networking API’s likeFetch,WebSocketsandWebTransport. We improve our existing implementations and together with the broader community we advance the web through making contributions to the evolution of relevant standards.

Opportunities to collaborate with other browser teams, and working in the open is the norm. Firefox is a mature open source project always looking for new improvements. Much of Firefox is written in C++, but most recent components are written in Rust, including our QUIC stack. You’ll be responsible for defining projects, writing open source code, tests, specifications, building prototypes, solving problems, and analyzing data. You are encouraged to present your work in the web community, collaborate with academia, or contribute to relevant Internet standards. You'll get feedback from real users and synthesize it into bug reports, feature designs, and strategic direction to make the web platform even better over time.

What you’ll do:

  • Improve Firefox’s web browsing experience with a particular focus on the networking stack, network related protocols and API’s, e.g.QUIC,Fetch,WebSockets,WebTransport, etc.
  • Design and implement new web platform features, or improvements to existing ones, in collaboration with the web community.
  • Diagnose and fix problems in our multi-threaded codebase.
  • Diagnose and fix platform-specific networking issues.
  • Improve Firefox’s stability, correctness and performance.
  • Analyze and reduce Firefox’s memory usage.
  • Work cooperatively with other Mozillians to identify and correct issues.

What you’ll bring:

  • 8+ years of experience as a Software Engineer.
  • Skilled in C++ and Rust. Proficient in other languages.
  • Skilled professional in HTTP protocols and implementations (HTTP/2, HTTP/3, QUIC, TLS, etc.)
  • Experience implementing networking standards in production code.
  • Familiarity with congestion control principles and modern OS dataplane primitives.

About this team and role:

The Commercial Legal team works with every part of Mozilla’s business, supporting strategic search and distribution deals, product and marketing partnerships, ad partnerships, and a broad array of vendor engagements. Anonym’s Infrastructure Team is a dedicated group of seasoned engineers committed to privacy, security, and automation. We leverage state of the art privacy-enhancing technologies such as Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), differential privacy, and advanced encryption techniques to develop and maintain our data processing pipelines, cloud-native applications, and engineering tools. About this team and role:

As a Senior Data Engineer at Mozilla, your primary area of focus will be on our Analytics Engineering team. This team focuses on modeling our data so that the rest of Mozilla has access to it, in the appropriate format, when they need it, to help them make data informed decisions. About this team and role:

The OS integration team is a cross-disciplinary team in charge of improving and maintaining Firefox on its various supported operating systems. We make sure it is a first-class citizen that integrates well with the desktop and supports new features offered by the operating system. Firefox is a sophisticated cross-platform application, and we deal with the operating system specifics. We work on things like crash reporting, interactions with third party software, sandboxing and hardening techniques, and investigate crashes. We develop close to the machine on low-level topics such as browser performance, security, Inter Process Communication (IPC), memory allocators, and power usage. We also maintain the integration with graphical widget libraries on the various operating systems.

What is a Staff Software Engineer at Mozilla?

A Staff Software Engineer is the next level from a Senior Software Engineer. We are seeking a new Program Manager to join the Pan Mozilla team working on the AI 360 workstream. In this role, you will develop effective project and program management systems for AI 360, a crosscutting program that acts as the connective tissue among all the AI activities happening across Mozilla Foundation, Mozilla Corporation, Mozilla Ventures and Mozilla AI. AI 360 aims to also explain this set of activities to the world, make links between them and measure their collective impact and progress over time. Program Management

About this team and role:

The Manager of Data Science, Advertising at Mozilla will lead the data science efforts related to our advertising initiatives. You will be responsible for driving data-driven decision-making, optimizing ad performance, and ensuring that our advertising strategies align with our ethical standards. This role requires a deep understanding of both the technical and strategic aspects of data science in the context of digital advertising.

What you’ll do:
  • Lead and develop a high-performing data science team focused on Mozilla’s growing advertising products and business, ensuring that we build an ads business that strikes the right balance between protecting user privacy, diversifying Mozilla’s sources of revenue, and serving our advertisers
  • Drive our efforts to utilize data to inform and optimize ad targeting, bidding strategies, and campaign performance, including the development predictive models and algorithms to enhance ad personalization while maintaining user privacy
  • Analyze and interpret complex datasets to provide actionable insights to stakeholders and lead the development of the metrics and reporting that enables stakeholders to become increasingly self-sufficient in this capacity
  • Lead the development and deployment of experimentation and measurement frameworks to demonstrate and continually increase the effectiveness of our ads products
  • Partner with Product and Engineering teams to shape and deliver our ads strategy and roadmap
What you’ll bring:
  • Master’s or PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 8+ years of experience in data science, with a strong focus on digital advertising
  • Experience with ad tech, programmatic advertising, and the digital media ecosystem
  • Proven track record of leading and scaling data science teams
  • Expertise in machine learning, statistical modeling, and data analytics
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R and SQL
  • Strong understanding of privacy-preserving technologies and their application in advertising
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data insights into actionable strategies for non-technical partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and influence decision-making at all levels of the organization.

About this team and role:

Mozilla Corporation seeks a Chief of Staff to the CEO who can serve as a thought partner, advisor and coordinator to Laura Chambers, CEO and the Steering Committee (CEO Direct reports) as they lead Mozilla through its next chapter of international expansion, strategic repositioning, and operational innovation.
