As a Lead Data Scientist at Hims & Hers, you will be responsible for identifying opportunities to apply data science and machine learning techniques to improve our marketing, products and processes. You will partner cross-functionally with Analytics, Product, Marketing and Operations to run deep-dive analysis, and build data products. You will partner with analysts, machine learning engineers, and others to build and implement data products that help advance our mission to eliminate stigmas and break down barriers to healthcare access.

You’ll be a leader who has a passion for driving business impact through data science, has strong communication skills, and enjoys doing hands-on work with a deep and broad technical toolset. You Will:

  • Provide technical guidance and thought leadership on data science methodologies, tools, and best practices
  • Identify opportunities to apply data science and machine learning solutions across marketing and product, and operations
  • Create data science roadmaps that accelerate hims & hers business goals
  • Drive projects in areas like marketing optimization, customer segmentation, lifetime value and retention prediction, importance modeling of early customer interactions, and revenue forecasting
  • Partner with engineers and business stakeholders to design, develop and deploy ML products end-to-end to drive business outcomes
  • Empower the Data Science team through mentorship and collaborative efforts, actively pursuing opportunities to foster cross-team knowledge expansion and mentorship initiative

You Have:

  • 10+ years working in Engineering and/or Data Science with a record of building ML models that have a measurable impact on the business
  • The ability to deliver business impact in the context of ambiguity and evolving priorities to technical and non-technical stakeholders 
  • Ability to develop technical roadmaps for solving complex business problems
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical partners
  • Experience developing and putting models into production, while also owning and maintaining production models long-term
  • Ability to manipulate large datasets with high dimensionality and complexity; proficiency in SQL and Python 
  • Proficiency with ML tools such as pandas, sklearn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow
  • MS or PhD degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or related field

Who we're looking for

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist (Pricing) to be a pivotal contributor to our Pricing, Tooling, and Modelling team. This role involves building sophisticated risk and market models, conducting rigorous analyses, and providing actionable insights to optimise our insurance pricing strategies. As well as building these models, you will play an active role in improving and extending our analytics tooling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine risk, demand, and market models using statistical techniques and actuarial methods
  • Analyse insurance data to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for improvements
  • Collaborate with the technical and street pricing teams to implement pricing changes effectively 
  • Communicate complex data concepts and model outcomes to a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Support continuous improvements by integrating new tools and technologies into the pricing process

Required Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Data Science or related field
  • Experience: Proven experience in non-life insurance pricing and modelling and advanced data science, with a strong focus on model development, deployment, and tooling
  • Technical Skills:
    • Python Proficiency: Strong Python programming skills, with experience in developing and maintaining analytics packages and tools. Familiarity with data science libraries such as pandas and scikit-learn
    • SQL: Proficient in SQL, particularly with cloud data warehouses like Snowflake
    • Data Tools: Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms (we’re on AWS) and data visualisation tools (Looker, matplotlib, seaborn)
  • Software Engineering: Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and software development best practices in a data-intensive environment
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication and project management skills, with a proven ability to work collaboratively across teams and present complex information in a clear, accessible way

Compensation and Benefits

Our anticipated compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets, and the range below indicates the low end of the lowest-compensated market to the high end of the highest-compensated market. About the Role

This is a general posting for multiple Data Science roles open across our 4-sided marketplace. You’ll get the chance to learn about the different problems the Data Science team solves as you go through the process. With regards to level, we have flexibility between L4 (Data Scientist) and L5 (Sr. Data Scientist). You will be joining a growing data science team and will tackle some of the most challenging and impactful problems that are transforming how people buy groceries every day. Insurance companies sit on a trove of data that is both broad and deep, spanning financial claims, clinical medical records, and rich product interaction data from our members. Connecting the dots across these datasets gives us unique insight into how the healthcare system functions and allows us to improve care coordination, better manage risk, build higher-performing provider networks, and create a standout consumer experience in our product. At Oscar, we are looking for bright and curious data minded individuals to join our team of 50+ researchers, data scientists, and analysts to leverage our efforts!

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will collaborate closely with our product and operations teams to understand and quantify the user experience for Oscar members and providers. You will drive projects aimed at enhancing the user experience through modeling, advanced analytics and data-driven insights.

Pay Transparency:

The base pay for this role is: $158,400 - $207,900 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar’s unlimited vacation program, company equity grants and annual performance bonuses.

 

You must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Oscar will not sponsor applicants for this role.

 

Responsibilities

  • Works with team and manager to impact longer term strategies and roadmap
  • Sets shorter term roadmap for team
  • May manage data scientists and/or analysts
  • Interacts and collaborates closely with data and business counterparts across functional areas
  • Researches, develops, and maintains data pipelines, statistical/ML models, and/or advanced analyses
  • Compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of industry or other quantitative technical fields (which may include academia).
  • 3+ years of work experience working with SQL, R, and/or Python to query, manipulate and analyze data
  • 3+ years experience building data models, using more advanced analytics methods, statistical modeling, and/or data processing

Bonus Points

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative or technical field
  • Experience in the healthcare, finance and/or insurance industries

We are looking for a Data Science Lead who will:

  • Partner closely with our clients' executive and technical teams to guide their decisions relating to AI, analytics, data engineering and data in general

  • Proactively identify and champion projects that solve complex problems across multiple domains

  • Apply specialized skills and fundamental data science methods (e.g. experimental design, recommender systems and machine learning when needed) to inform improvements to our clients' businesses

  • Design and implement end-to-end data pipelines: work closely with stakeholders to build models, tables or schemas that support our clients' business processes

  • Empower teams both internal and external to build and maintain actionable KPIs, production-quality dashboards, informative deep dives, and scalable data products

Qualifications

  • BS (or higher, e.g., MS, or PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Statistics
  • 3-7 years of commercial experience as a data science lead solving high impact business problems, including 1+ years leading and maintaining high performance data science teams
  • Extensive experience using Python including a strong grasp of object oriented programming (OOP) fundamentals
  • Experience building data pipelines and driving ETL design decisions
  • Experience delivering business impact through analysis and data products
  • Technical leadership and management experience where you can jump into the code to the level that your peers admire and respect, and are also interested in helping mentor your peers
  • Experience creating data product strategies, shipping data products, iterating after launch, and trying again
  • Strong ability to prioritize and communicate to technical and non-technical audiences alike
  • Working knowledge of Snowflake
  • Devops experiences a plus
