About you
You are a development operations sorcerer. You believe in increasing the development productivity and quality through automation of common practices as this ensures their consistent and thorough application. You prefer to “document” and maintain scripts, code, and configuration over describing how-tos that people need to follow exactly

You want to go beyond writing code for the public and write code for those who write *that* code. Based on your own experience you have many ideas and an open mind to listen and discover development challenges that you can solve, if only you could focus on these things.

What You'll Do
You’ll be responsible for a variety of development-related automation tasks that involve system administration, integration, and automation with coding / scripting as it pertains to those systems, such as:

  • Development environment (all tools used by developers to produce the product code)
  • CI/CD infrastructure
  • Testing infrastructure (various environments and stages)
  • Evolving test automation tools and frameworks used by developers to write and plug their tests in
  • Be on the lookout for how this list can change to our benefit

To do this you will code/script in at least a few programming or scripting languages relevant to the systems in use and/or automating them:

  • Shell scripting languages (sh, bash, …)
  • General purpose languages in use for automation, such as Python, (Bazel) Starlark, JavaScript, TypeScript, etc.

You will communicate, share knowledge and ideas with:

  • Peers, to share thoughts, mentor, or be mentored
  • QA Engineers about test automation
  • Developers / Engineers about the use, application, needs, and evolution of the systems they are responsible for

Requirements

  • Strong computer science fundamentals based on a degree in computer science or distinctive work experience in software development
  • Strong familiarity with Git
  • Build, CI/CD automation track record in a cloud environment
  • Shell scripting prowess in a Linux environment
  • Development track record in at least one of the following languages: Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C and/or C++
  • Test automation track record (infrastructure, unit tests, integration test, system test, …)
  • You can develop foundational tools to be used across the entire company
  • You are comfortable interacting with senior management and project stakeholders, as well as other development teams
  • A demonstrated ability to provide guidance, mentorship, and support
  • Exceptional attention to detail and focus on quality
  • You possess strong communication skills and can capture requirements, as well as share your designs and progress

About our Stack

  • Tooling and infrastructure: GitLab, Bazel, Kubernetes, VS Code server, Linux environment
  • Back-end: Python, Django, PostgreSQL
  • Front-end: TypeScript, Next.js, React/Redu

About our culture

  • We work in tight-knit teams to maximize speed and cultivate an ownership mentality.
  • We cherish curiosity and an obsession for details because we know these details are invaluable over the long run.
  • We promote an environment where ideas are challenged. The best ideas win!
  • We're hyper-focused on our achievements and our ability to execute on our promises. We act with urgency.
  • It's not always about us. We give back to our community to ensure it can grow.
  • We love to compete and have fun. Our game nights are legendary.

About our results
Our customers see a 5x increase in e-commerce conversion rates and a dramatic decrease in the time it takes for their customers to make a purchase decision. We are also reducing the world’s carbon footprint by eliminating trips to the store and avoiding product returns, while also saving marriages -- now you can be sure you’re buying the right product for your home.

About our office and remote work
We are located in downtown Toronto with nearby access to both of the main subway lines. Currently, we are all working from home; we encourage our teams to work from wherever they are most productive, and many of us will continue to work from home in the future, either full-time or partially. While we're all working remotely, we’ve come up with a few ways to keep everyone on the same page, including a quick company-wide check-in every Monday, remote coffee breaks on Fridays, and ad hoc topical sharing sessions. Another big upside is you get to be around your pets and plants (if you have them).

About our hiring process
Now: You upload your resume and complete a brief questionnaire.

Step 1: We arrange a video call with you to assess your abilities.

WordPress Developer - Remote

WP Media is hiring a Remote WordPress Developer - Remote

Are you a WordPress Developer with a passion for creating outstanding web experiences? Do you enjoy offering an efficient and frictionless journey to the users? Are you convinced that making a first great impression with commercial websites and services is a key factor in a company’s success?

If you answered yes to these questions, we are sure this position will sound super exciting to you. ????

We are looking for a friendly person in love with web performance to join our growing Engineering team. ????

Keep reading for more details! ????

Become Our New WordPress Developer!

WP Media is the French company behind successful WordPress plugins like WP Rocket and Imagify. WP Rocket is the premium caching plugin for WordPress used by +4,300,000 websites worldwide. Our plugin makes sites go at the speed of light in just a few clicks. Imagify is our free image optimization service, including a free WordPress plugin: we have already optimized more than 15,000,000,000 images! ????

You will join our remote, global Engineering team, which is spread across Canada, France, Egypt, Greece, Kenya, Nigeria and Romania. To facilitate this international teamwork, you live or work in a time zone between UTC+2 to UTC-7. We are so curious to know which new country will be added to our distributed team map! ????

WP Media is part of group. One, a leading European provider of online presence, cloud hosting and digital marketing services.

What You Will Be Doing:

You will be joining our Engineering Service team, in charge of implementing and maintaining WP Media’s services for internal and external users so that the company can efficiently deliver the best web optimization experience.

In your job as a WordPress Developer, your primary focus will be ensuring our websites, web-services and back-office tools work and perform as needed, and that they meet our quality and performance standards, and best practices. You will mostly be working with our WordPress websites (PHP and JavaScript). You will deliver the marketing and product visions by contributing to features related to user journey, payment systems, data pipelines, and back-office processes.

Our stack is mainly composed of PHP (WordPress), Python (Django) and JavaScript (Node.js). While previous experiences with WordPress, PHP and Javascript are required for this position, knowledge of Python and Django is appreciated but not required.

Here is a list describing the tasks involved in this position (do you happen to like making lists? So do we!):

  • Maintain and continuously improve and high-traffic web applications and WordPress websites.
  • Seek opportunities to make our web stack run faster, be easier to maintain and be more reliable, robust and scalable.
  • Prioritize solutions with the team and then develop and deploy them.
  • Be a key asset for our Product, Marketing and Support teams: you will develop and maintain the tools and data they need to make our business grow and provide an outstanding experience for our customers.
  • Contribute to groomings, reviews, process improvements and technical decisions as a member of the Engineering Service team.

During this journey, you will also have growing opportunities by working with your fellow teammates on back-end service developments, WordPress plugin developments and DevOps tasks.

You will join a team and a company with a strong tech culture where continuous improvements, collaboration with peers and autonomy are key values. Our engineering teams frequently meet to share their learnings and feedback, and maintain public documentation of our best practices (for instance, check out our new engineering handbook!). We also regularly dedicate time to codebase maintenance, open-source contribution and best-practice refinements: we believe having a great developer experience requires effort, but leads to better products in the long run.

What Do You Need To Excel at This Job:

  • Being Yourself.

The WP Media team is diverse and composed of people from all over the world. Respect, collaboration, and inclusivity are some of our core values (more on this below). Every day of work is an exciting opportunity to get in touch with fantastic people who will enrich your cultural and professional background.

  • Passion and humbleness.

You are a skilled, passionate, and humble software engineer who is friendly, collaborative, and supportive. Solving problems and building solutions that help people are the values that make your work special and rewarding.

  • Consider how your work impacts others.

At WP Media, one of our values is "user first": we do what is best for them and we work to offer them an exceptional experience with our products. You consider how the code we build impacts them. You value personal growth and constructive feedback. People feel good around you because you love sharing what you know while continuously improving yourself, remaining thoughtful and flexible in your approach.

  • Proficient knowledge of English.

Empathetic and collaborative communication is key: you are comfortable writing, speaking, and listening in English with technical and non-technical teammates.

  • Proven web development experience.

You are an experienced WordPress Developer who already released and maintained WordPress websites. You know how to integrate third-party tools such as payment systems or data analysis tools. You know how to test, validate and monitor the code you produce. Previous experiences with back-end services and DevOps activities are welcomed but not required.

  • You own your developments.

Framing issues and identifying solutions makes you thrive. You are not satisfied with simply expediting tickets and issues but you want to own the codebase you work on and actively take part in its evolution. You want to drive continuous improvement by enhancing embedded tests, best practices and keeping the stack up-to-date.

  • Love quality and continuous improvement.

Quality and continuous improvement drive you. You know that quality means the code not only works, but works as expected in many different environments and conditions. You insist on code being reliable, complete, robust, and stable. You are a collaborator, working with your teammates to continuously improve our practices, processes, code, tools, and pipelines.

Do you bring even more to the table?

Do you want to know a few other things we appreciate about our candidates? Don’t worry if you don’t have experience in any of these areas, we can teach you, and learn together along the way!

  • Not afraid of DevOps activities.

Deploying and running products, services and websites is as important as developing them. While we have a team dedicated to those activities, you will assist them as the expert of the websites you developed. You might be familiar with Kubernetes, Chef, Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry and Kibana? If you aren’t, don’t worry: We will teach you!

  • Knowledge of Django and Node.js.

Part of our back-end services use Django and Node.js. You might have to work a bit on it from time to time. If you enjoy it, that can be more often than that! If you have never touched it, we will teach you as well!

  • Know the web performance.

You have experience with web performance optimization. You know how to measure page load speeds. You understand caching. Terms like gzip, preload, minify, and lazyload are not foreign to you. You know the difference between PageSpeed score and page load time. If you don’t know, our product team and your engineering colleagues will teach you!

Do you want to know three other things we appreciate about our candidates?

  • A startup mentality
You are doer, you are adaptable and you like to evolve in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous remote job experience.
Slack will be your virtual office, where all the life of the company takes place.
  • The involvement in the WordPress community.
We support our teammates to attend and/or speak at WordCamps and volunteer within the community.

If you are excited about providing technical assistance to our customers, this is the perfect opportunity for you.

What You Should Know About Our Company: WP Media

Founded in 2014 in the beautiful Lyon, France, WP Media is an equal opportunity employer with a distributed team of +40 teammates living around the world.

We are best known as the creators of WP Rocket, but we also developed Imagify and RocketCDN, and own BackWPUp.

Healthy balance between work and private life.

We encourage our employees to enjoy their family and hobbies with flexible working hours and minimum vacation policy. There are no time cards to stamp, only customers to make happy and friendly teammates to work with! We care about the work you do, not about the hours you sit at your desk.

We have a public salary grid. Once a year, when the company does well, we share our profits with the team in the form of bonuses.

Perks and benefits

We want the people on our team to feel that they always receive what they need to shine. This is why we offer:

  • Budget for setting up your home office

We like to see each other in person whenever possible.

Every year, we organize a trip with the whole team and spend a week of coworking and fun activities together.

To give you an idea, so far we have traveled to Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Greece, Serbia :

Now that we've told you so much about us, it's your turn.

Let us know why you would like to become our new WordPress Developer and why you think you are the person we are looking for.
