Overview

 

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Security Engineer to join our dynamic security team. We work on a range of interesting and challenging problems, from supporting thousands of concurrent shoppers and processing millions of data points in real time, to developing and enhancing internal tools, addressing vulnerabilities, and managing secrets. A successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the security and integrity of our products throughout their lifecycle. This position requires a deep understanding of security principles, the ability to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities and a proactive approach to safeguarding our technology platform.

 

Our goal is to run the world's most trusted and secure technology platform. The product security function within the Instacart security team works with product development, infrastructure, IT, finance, legal, and other cross-functional stakeholders to design and implement scalable solutions and effective controls to protect our most valuable assets.



About the Team

 

The security team at Instacart is responsible for ensuring the security and privacy of Instacart’s suite of products and the company as a whole. We believe that with the right mixture of tools and engineering prowess, we can secure our most important assets without negatively impacting productivity. You will be a key member of the Security Engineering team that is responsible for developing security-focused features and frameworks for Instacart. Ideally a hybrid builder/breaker, you will have an opportunity to lead high impactful projects across the platform and assist in defining the internal team processes. You will be directly influencing the security posture of many products and systems across the company. 

 

About the Job 

 

  • Design, implement and ship high-quality security features for product and internal tools across Instacart.
  • Deploy and operationalize a variety of open source and commercially available security tools and frameworks, including static and dynamic analysis, secret scanning,and IDS tools.
  • Conduct comprehensive security design reviews of new and existing products to identify potential security risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering and product to integrate security best practices into the software development process.
  • Advise on common best practices for security application design and architecture.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to support critical operations and respond to incidents with urgency.
  • Share knowledge and mentor other team members, promoting a culture of continuous learning and growth.

 

About You

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • 5+ years of experience in Security Engineering or Software Engineering, demonstrating a strong grasp of product security concepts and principles
  • Strong knowledge of common back-end web technologies (such as Ruby on Rails, Python, Golang, SQL, etc.) in a large scale distributed system environment
  • Experience with threat modeling, security assessments, product security concepts, and security architecture reviews
  • An ability to make data-driven decisions & prioritize initiatives that improve key security metrics
  • An ability to balance a sense of urgency with shipping high-quality and pragmatic solutions.
  • Strong self-management and organizational skills
  • Experience developing tools and automation using common devops toolsets and programming languages (such as Python, Ruby, or Go)

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math or related work experience
  • In depth knowledge on the best remediation techniques for different application vulnerabilities and the ability to explain them to product teams
  • An ability to create written work products and detailed technical documents to work effectively with cross functional teams and drive alignment on security objectives and plans.
  • Breaker experience, such as web/application penetration testing
  • Experience working with highly ephemeral environments
  • A security-related or architecture-related certification such as CISSP, OSCP, CEH

Role  

As a Senior Staff Product Security Engineer on the ServiceNow SSDL team, you will collaborate with developers and software architects on highly technical solutions and help the organization build secure and resilient software. You will be threat modeling software products and services to identify potential risk and participate in architectural reviews of products in development.    

A key part of this position is to ensure the continued success of a large and growing security champions program. You will help mentor security champions and assist them in secure software design. As a Senior Staff Product Security Engineer, you will help security champions be successful.

  • Developer-level proficiency in one or more languages - Python, Java, JavaScript, and Golang preferred 

  • Working knowledge of Machine Learning and taxonomies such as BIML that categorize known attacks on machine learning models 

  • In-depth knowledge of software design patterns and their security considerations 

  • Expertise in authentication and authorization standards including OAuth, OIDC, SAML, JWT, and PASETO 

  • Knowledge of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, digital signatures, PKI, TLS, and cryptographic hash functions 

  • Knowledge of cloud native technologies including containers, Kubernetes, and services provided by AWS, GCP, and Azure 

  • Knowledge of static analysis (SAST), dynamic analysis (DAST), and software composition analysis (SCA) security tools

    Key Role Responsibilities: 

    • Help own and build out new features within our cross-platform TypeScript React Native app, and Golang backend APIs.
    • Manage our releases, using tools like cohorting, feature flags, and app-store infrastructure to ensure a safe rollout to our millions of active users.
    • Maintain a strong working relationship with product, design, and the business to ensure stakeholder needs are being evaluated and met.
    • Work with the team to continuously build clean, scalable, robust, and testable code.
    • Develop a deep working knowledge of your application, data domain, and KPIs.

    Minimum Requirements: 

    • 6+ years experience solving technical problems as part of a team.
    • Experience developing and delivering a mobile application to Apple and Google’s mobile app stores.
    • Strong familiarity with modern Frontend Development, Javascript or Typescript, and building applications with React Native, or similar cross-platform framework.
    • Understanding of relational databases like MySQL.

    Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

    • Knowledgeable in writing automated tests for applications (unit, integration, end-to-end), and implementing them in a CI environment.
    • Ability to solve problems with backend-focused languages like Go, Python, Java or similar.
    • Familiarity with typical microservice architecture composed of HTTP APIs.
    • Experience working with native code on iOS, Android.

    As a Principal Engineer (Infrastructure Engineering), you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the infrastructure that supports our mission-critical applications and services. You will be responsible for hands-on coding, upleveling junior engineers, driving architectural decisions, and ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our infrastructure. 

    The infrastructure engineering team’s mission is to develop and maintain cloud infrastructure to ensure Personio runs on a platform that is reliable, scalable, and easy to operate. We measure the effectiveness of this mission through operational metrics which prompt us to proactively create and scale new infrastructure when needed, and we have a specific ownership of the availability and operation of the AWS cloud infrastructure which is the basis of our platform.

    Role Responsibilities: What you'll do
    • Technical Leadership: Lead and mentor infrastructure engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering a culture of excellence. 
    • Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to research, design, and implement robust, scalable infrastructure solutions. Work closely with Engineering teams to optimize application performance and reliability in the infrastructure.
    • Roadmap Development: Develop and maintain a roadmap for infrastructure projects and scalability requirements (10x scale).
    • Implementation: Implement best practices for infrastructure management, monitoring, and automation to ensure high availability and reliability. 
    • Operations: Operational rigor to ensure infrastructure security and incident management.
    How you’ll go about it:
    • Proven track record of leading the architecture and design of new and existing systems with AWS.
    • Experience designing and building scalable software to handle 10x load increases and 100x peak traffic spikes.
    • Maintain open and clear communication and foster a collaborative work environment with team members, stakeholders, and management. 
    • ‘'Platform as a product' mindset with strategic thinking. 
    • Ability to navigate technical debates and drive technical alignment.
    Role Requirements: What you need to succeed
    • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science or a related field.
    • 10+ yrs of experience building and designing scalable applications, tools, or distributed systems.
    • Proven track record of technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and hiring. 
    • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
    • Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language.
    • Strong expertise the following technologies; Kubernetes (k8s), ECS Fargate, RDS, Aurora, Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB, MKS (Kafka), S3, AWS Backup,  AWS DMS, Lambda, EC2, DynamoDB.
    • Familiarity with one or more of our language stacks: Terraform, CDK, Java/Kotlin (JVM, Gradle, SpringBoot), Golang, and TypeScript. 
    • You will have a deep understanding and an interest in DevOps tools and technologies such as AWS (CDK, ECS, Fargate etc.), Sentry, DataDog, Docker, Gitlab CI, K8S, Flagger, Linkerd, as well as deployment automation (CI/CD pipelines, feature flags, blue/green and canary deployments)

    About the Role

    We’re looking for an IT Client Platform Engineer to join our Client Platform Engineering team!  You will solve complex endpoint management problems and drive security and end user experience for our End User Computing platform, bridging the gap between IT Operations, Enterprise Security and corporate users across the globe.  In this role, you’ll assist our Windows and macOS teams delivering software at a global scale and support our IT Operations teams troubleshooting complex user issues.  This role reports to the Manager of IT Client Platform Engineering.
