What you'll be doing:

As an AI/Machine Learning Engineer, you will lead the development and deployment of advanced machine learning models and AI solutions. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and deliver impactful AI-driven products.

What you’ll bring:

  • 7+ years of experience in software and machine learning engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience leading cross-functional AI/ML teams.
  • Strong knowledge of natural language processing (NLP) and transformer models.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with ML libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Hugging Face Transformers.
  • Expertise in the end-to-end ML pipeline, including data processing, model training, serving, and monitoring.
  • Experience in building scalable, cloud-based AI/ML solutions (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Understanding of ethics in AI, including bias mitigation, fairness, PII/PHI data and privacy concerns.
  • Experience with fine-tuning pre-trained models for specific business use cases.
  • Familiarity with MLOps best practices, including IaC, CI/CD for ML models, version control for data and models, and performance monitoring.
  • Strong communication skills for interfacing with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

About our Machine Learning Team:

At Monzo, Machine Learning Scientists have ownership across the entire ML lifecycle, from from formulating ML problems to deploying models and monitoring their impact on key product and business metrics.

As a Senior Lead ML Scientist, you’ll be the one of the most senior Individual Contributor (IC) Machine Learning Scientist! This will give you a real opportunity to lead us into an exciting new phase of fraud and financial crime prevention, utilising billions of rows of data and the learnings from your previous successes in designing and building advanced Machine Learning based systems for topics like personalisation, demand forecasting, workforce management, detection systems.

Your day-to-day

As our most senior technical IC, you’ll be providing key technical leadership and shipping highly impactful ML-based solutions. You’ll be empowered to work across the collective identifying the most impactful areas and leading solution development.

You’ll work with our mission-oriented cross functional product squads, collaborating closely with product managers, data scientists, backend engineers and designers in an agile environment.

You’ll be expected to use your technical expertise to advise senior business stakeholders and help to set and advance our strategic direction across multiple squads.

You’ll also be a technical leader within the Machine Learning discipline, helping to steer technical work and drive up standards.

This will involve:

  • Working with stakeholders across the organisation to identify and scope out the most impactful opportunities to tackle product challenges with Machine Learning.
  • Bringing the learnings from your previous successes in designing and building advanced Machine Learning systems to lead advancements in our product development capabilities, for example utilising deep learning, graph-based, and sequence-based architectures.
  • Providing technical leadership to drive up levels of technical expertise and best practice across the Machine Learning discipline, leading by example and mentoring others.
  • Working closely with our MLOps team to steer the ongoing development of tools to enable rapid iteration of models and optimisations of the full ML model lifecycle.

About our Machine Learning FinCrime Team:

Our Machine Learning Scientists work on a range of problems within the different financial crime areas ranging from fraud detection and prevention, transaction monitoring for different types of suspicious activity through to customer risk assessment and operational tooling.

What you’ll be working on: 

A Lead Machine Learning Scientist at Monzo is a technical Individual Contributor (IC) leadership position. As a technical Machine Learning expert, working with billions of rows of data stored on a modern cloud native data platform, we’ll be expecting you to leverage your deep experience of developing and deploying advanced Machine Learning models to: 

  • Automatically and accurately detect suspicious user behaviours while minimising impact to genuine customers and operational costs
  • Adapt quickly and appropriately to changing fraud and financial crime trends, ensuring our detection systems remain performant through time. 

The technical approaches you take to help solve these problems will be very much in your hands and we’ll strongly encourage and support experimentation and innovation. Your day-to-day:   

As a technical individual contributor, you’ll be providing technical leadership and shipping highly impactful ML-based solutions. You’ll be embedded in a cross functional product squad, working closely with product managers, data scientists, backend engineers and designers in an agile environment. You’ll also be a technical leader within the Machine Learning discipline, helping to steer technical work and drive up standards.

  • Continuously improve our solutions to make them more simple, robust, efficient and scalable. This includes pipeline design and continuous improvement schemes through machine learning
  • Able to effectively manage existing code base, document past experiences, automate processes, and create feedback loops

  • Extensive experience of proven experience as a Data Scientist and/or Product Engineer, working on similar projects such as user communication, service optimization and personalization.
  • Practical experience in methodologies used in recommender system such as Collaborative Filtering, Content Based Recommendation, Matrix Factorization.
  • Experience with the management of ML code base and experimentation result in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Experience with cloud platforms and technologies for deploying and managing machine learning models at scale, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Entrepreneurial and curious mindset with a passion for experimentation and innovation combined with practical business instincts; can both dream big as well as execute and prioritize projects aligned to strategic needs
  • Experience or desire to manage, mentor, and train Jr Data Scientists

Competencies, Skills & Attributes:

Essential:

  • Proficiency in data analysis, data mining and programming languages preferably with SQL, Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
  • Practical experience in ML ops, such as Python packaging, Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD, deployment and monitoring of ML models’ performance.

About the Role:As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will utilize your extensive technical knowledge to address and solve critical, complex issues in our marketplace systems. You will apply machine learning to create and optimize solutions in impactful areas such as routing optimization, pricing, dispatch and mapping. You will be at the forefront of initiatives, overseeing them from the initial concept stage all the way through to prototyping and implementation, in addition to conducting experiments.

 

About the Team:The Logistics & ML group is responsible for the intelligence and execution behind Instacart’s fulfillment system. The team optimizes a multi-sided marketplace to ensure customers get their orders on-time and in high quality, shoppers get efficient and fulfilling work, and retailers and consumer brands get reasonable business. The team tackles hard problems in a variety of spaces, such as matching, pricing, and geospatial, as well as foundational problems executing on a high throughput system with dynamic data.

 

About the Job:

  • Design, develop, and deploy machine learning solutions to tackle practical challenges in the marketplace.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, data scientists, and backend engineers to deeply understand business needs and create impactful ML applications.
  • Actively engage with diverse stakeholders to ensure that solutions are well-integrated and aligned with business goals.
  • Push the envelope on our operational efficiency by continually refining and advancing our algorithms and models.

 

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have a graduate degree (masters or PhD) in artificial intelligence, machine learning, operations research or equivalent self study and experience 
  • Have strong programming skills in Python and fluency in data manipulation (SQL, Pandas) and Machine Learning (scikit-learn, XGBoost, Keras/Tensorflow) tools
  • Have strong analytical skills and problem-solving ability
  • Are a strong communicator who can collaborate with diverse stakeholders across all levels

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have 6+ years of industry experience using machine learning to solve real-world problems with large datasets
  • Knowledge of deep learning frameworks and methodologies
  • Experience in applying machine learning and optimization techniques to solve marketplace problems
  • Proven track record as a tech lead or team leader, managing and driving forward complex, cross-functional initiatives involving multiple stakeholders
